Every now and again, we really have to dig down deep into our hearts to decide whether a life is worth saving. It’s not all that hard a decision to make when you’re willing to put your common sense aside and just look at that little face looking back at you. At least it wasn’t a difficult decision for our wonderful volunteer, Pam Mayes, When we told her about our little French Bulldog puppy with legs that didn’t seem to work at all, Pam didn’t even hesitate. She immediately agreed to take her in.

Bijoux was eight years old and always delicate with respiratory issues for which she had surgery early on in life. She finally succumbed to the progressive disease when her larynx collapsed. The only option the surgeon at Animal Center could offer was a permanent tracheoscopy tube in her neck and I made the heartbreaking decision to put her down so that she would not suffer.
On March 11, 2000, my very first litter of French Bulldog puppies were born by c-section. I was hoping for a girl so when four boys came out I was a little disappointed that I might not get the girl I was hoping for, but sure enough the fifth and last puppy was a tiny little girl with two big white dots on the back of her neck weighing in at just about 6 ounces.
I first got interested in French bulldogs in the late 1990s and finally found a good breeder in my city. She put me in a room with about a dozen of them. I spent a long time meeting them all, but there was just one who kept catching my eye and my heart. A brindle, bigger than the rest, he came over and claimed my foot, then my lap, and stared straight into my eyes.
Our beloved Frenchie went to peace on November 4, 2008, at 10 and 1/2 years old. He was our faithful friend, companion and source of untold joy.
